Arqit announces participation in GSMA Post-Quantum Telco Network Taskforce

Arqit is a key member of the GSMA Post-Quantum Telco Network (“PQTN”) Taskforce established in September 2022 by the GSMA, the world’s largest member-led organisation supporting the global mobile ecosystem. The PQTN taskforce works to define policy, regulation and operator business processes globally for the enhanced protection of telecommunications in a future of advanced quantum computing.

Like many critical infrastructure sectors, telecoms require quantum-safe security systems in place to protect consumer and business data. Without this, sensitive information is already vulnerable to ‘Store Now, Decrypt Later’ attacks. Furthermore, new encryption techniques are required today in order to secure the proliferation of Internet of Things devices. The UK Government recently announced its National Quantum Strategy in which telecoms was identified as a priority sector.

The taskforce recently released a white paper which experts at Arqit co-authored, highlighting the impact assessment of post-quantum in telecoms and calls on operators to develop a Post-Quantum cryptography transition plan.

David Williams, Arqit Founder, Chairman and CEO said:

“We are honoured to work alongside other industry leaders with the GSMA to promote the adoption of quantum-safe solutions across telecoms networks. With our world-class experts and market leading symmetric key agreement platform, Arqit is ideally placed to be at the forefront of addressing the challenges quantum technology brings and to help mobile network operators protect themselves against the cyber threats of both today and tomorrow. We are pleased to note that the white paper recommended that symmetric key encryption is the most straight forward approach for the industry to achieve quantum safe security.”

Alex Sinclair, CTO, GSMA said:

“We’re very pleased to welcome Arqit as a GSMA member. We’re particularly looking forward to the team’s support with the PQTN Taskforce and to help map out the path to quantum-safe networks, devices and systems in the telecoms industry. Arqit’s expertise will be invaluable as the GSMA looks to convene the industry and help build secure and resilient telco networks that provide the foundations for the quantum computing era.”
